1. Why I created this Series
In this opening episode, Dr Bassam Nuseibeh introduces the podcast series by sharing his profoundly personal motivation behind creating it. He reflects on his lived experience as both an emergency physician and a parent of an autistic child and how these dual perspectives have profoundly shaped his understanding of healthcare, communication, and human behaviour.
He discusses his recent ADHD diagnosis and how it has reframed his view of neurodivergence and empathy in clinical practice. The episode explores the urgent need for a better understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in emergency departments and the everyday challenges patients face when their needs aren't recognised or supported.
Listeners are given a preview of what to expect in future episodes: practical strategies, real case studies, expert insights, and thought-provoking discussions. The goal is clear—to help healthcare professionals improve the experiences and outcomes of autistic patients while also better understanding their responses and behaviours under stress.
This is not just a podcast about autism. It's a podcast about people, connection, and changing the culture of emergency care—starting with awareness and compassion.
